Halloween Spider Web Bean Dip
A sour cream web turns simple black bean dip into a Halloween party centerpiece. Keep the decoration bold and simple so it is easy to see.
Serves: 6–8 as a snack | Estimated total time: 20 minutes
Ingredients
- 2 cans (15 ounces each) black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1/2 cup mild salsa
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons lime juice
- 2–4 tablespoons water as needed
- 1/4 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
- 1/3 cup sour cream
- 1–2 teaspoons milk
- Tortilla chips, for serving
- Optional: pitted black olives for a spider decoration
How to make it
- Blend beans, salsa, oil, cumin, garlic powder, lime juice and 2 tablespoons water until mostly smooth. Add a little more water if needed.
- Taste and season with salt. Spoon into a shallow serving bowl and smooth the surface.
- Mix sour cream with just enough milk to pipe. Spoon into a small food-safe bag and snip a tiny corner.
- Pipe concentric circles over the dip. Draw a clean toothpick gently from the center to the edge in 8 directions to create a web. For an optional spider, use an olive half as the body and thin olive strips as legs.
- Serve with chips. Keep chilled until serving and do not leave it at room temperature longer than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F.
Helpful tips
Use a shallow bowl so the web remains visible. Add the sour cream design just before serving to keep the lines distinct.
Storage and reheating
Refrigerate perishable leftovers in shallow covered containers within 2 hours, or within 1 hour above 90°F. Keep the refrigerator at 40°F or below and use within 3–4 days. For dishes served hot, reheat leftovers to 165°F throughout. Keep bread and crisp toppings separate until serving. See USDA leftover storage guidance.
Common question
Can I make it ahead? Refrigerate the bean dip covered, then add the decoration when ready to serve.
